Raspberry pi zero Heat sink Is it worth it?

I pretty much just go over the process of applying a heat sink and show how to cool it much far better, and really go over the difference between nude & not nude raspberry pi zero.

Assault Cube server raspberry pi zero running

So on the pi zero much like the doom post I made requires some changes to the C++ code in order to compile.

The purpose for this guide is to get it running on the raspberry pi zero w running raspbian lite to get the most out of this little machine I recommend installing tmux as well to have multiple terminals.

This time around it is in  2 places within the source code located in the src folder from the sourceforge download. or on the github.

SO either wget
Or git clone will be needed

Now pretty much this guide should be considered a extension of quakeonlans guide found here. Which quake on lans guide is a extension on yet another guide.

(DO NOT DOWNLOAD HIS IMAGE BUILD IT WON'T WORK ON THE ZERO with RASPBIAN LITE which is what you want to use for server applications)

You must follow both guides to get the best yield, follow the yet another guide till you have to build it, then follow quakeonlans, on attempting to build it from quakeonlans you will find that the build process throws errors in the code in the tools.h file.

Now all you need to do is go to your tools.h, and rename the round() function to roundT.

The line looks like : static inline float roundT(float x) { return floor(x + 0.5f); }// generic useful stuff for any C++ program

Once that is done I would just follow the guides other guides from there.

Now they are very vague and unclear about explainations. Once you are done compiling you need to move the whole folder from bin_unix to your assaultcube game root folder.

After doing that use the server_wizzard.sh because yeah you want a configuration you can save.

After setting up your server make SURE you forward the port you setup in the wizard.

Setting up Doom Server on Raspberry Pi Zero

Pretty much I followed the quakeonlan.com 's guide on it, but they left out massive steps.
Which they followed a guide on zanronum's wiki here : https://wiki.zandronum.com/Compiling_the_Zandronum_server_on_a_Raspberry_Pi

Now why I am making this post is there are errors with when attempting to compile your build. So please just follow the wiki's guide up till then.

Now when you go to build on the pi zero, you will find 2 errors.

A extra endif error, in main class file
which is just removing that.
There is negative values being applied to a char array which means the char array needs to be signed just by adding signed infront of it.

The other thing this is missing is the port forwarding process, and if you are running a light version of raspbian which is terminal use only a step into multitasking within the terminal.

On building it will state which file has said errors and the location and the issues, but not how to fix it.

So yeah just follow the wiki's steps, and then when the errors come up you should now know.

After following the guide you will want to install something called tmux,
You will also want to in a web browser go to your router configuration menu (192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 or 10.0.0.1, if you need to look for your gateway's IP address with ipconfig /all or ifconfig -a. After doing so you will want to navigate to where port forwarding is, and port forward 10666 and +1 for each server.

Then launch your zandronum-server in ~/zandronum-build/zandronum/zandronum-server.
After doing this you should have a visible doom server, but it will be a unnamed server, so now you will need to come up with a server name by typing sv_hostname $NAME

Now if you want to launch multiple servers from the same pi which I have launched up to 4 without issue. After the 5th server the temp was too high, and the ram unused was at 1mb. Its easy to do with tmux, to install tmux do sudo apt-get install tmux then to use it simply  do tmux -s new sessionname
then once doing that it will add a green boarder to the bottom of your terminal with a fresh terminal session. Then do tmux split-window -v or -h and use CTRL + B + arrow dirrection to switch between terminals.

Then launch your servers in each terminal, KEEP ONE TERMINAL OPEN so you can do other tasks at all time.

I will provide the server build here soon.

Using your Raspberry pi To Setup a webserver

Now there is various os options you have here, but so far I have only gotten any luck out of apache.
Now you can install php & mysql for it, but you need to install configuations for it...

Now What I tested these with was raspbian and arch.
With arch I could not get get mysql to install properly

I had no luck with any of the other options for web server hosting than apache, there are many others but they all ran into some kind of errors with their raspberry pi builds.(such as nginx)

So for the most part all you need is these commands

in raspbian:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install  ssh apache2 php5 libapache2-mod-php5 mysql-server mysql-client php5-mysql vsftpd
sudo service apache2 restart
sudo chown -R pi /var/www
ln -s /var/www/html ~

Now I will go over all these commands

Update & upgrade both make sure your applications are upto date and your OS is aswell.

Now install ssh apache2 esc.... installs all the nessary applications we are going to need, including php, mysql for databases, and vsftpd for a file transfer protocol. ssh will allow you to remote into it, and is only nessary to install if it isn't configured properly or not included with the install.

Then the service apache2 will restart your freshly installed apache. chown will apply ownership over a folder, and ln -s will create a link to your webservers folder it reads from in your home destination.

You will also need to atleast change your default user which is typically pi, you will need to change the password with the command

passwd pi

Now ssh should work properly to test it with you will need to install a ssh client on another device to test it with.

Now all you have to do to test this webserver is find its IP information out with ifconfig -a

and look for something like : "inet addr:10.0.0.18" your internal ip address will be different based on your router and how your network is setup. Once you do that type your internal ip address in to your web browser of choice and it should display a webpage.

Now you might want to make your site from here.

Once you want to publish it to the web you will need to setup your port forwarding on your router using this command
route -n
Kernel IP routing table
Destination     Gateway         Genmask         Flags Metric Ref    Use Iface
0.0.0.0         10.0.0.1        0.0.0.0         UG    202    0        0 eth0
0.0.0.0         192.168.2.1     0.0.0.0         UG    303    0        0 wlan0
10.0.0.0        0.0.0.0         255.255.255.0   U     202    0        0 eth0

192.168.2.0     0.0.0.0         255.255.255.0   U     303    0        0 wlan0

Now what you are looking for the gateway you are actually using, like in mycase it is eth0

so the routers IP is 10.0.0.1
So type that in your browser of choice and this point I can't help you after this because each router has its configuration options different.

Once you google search your routers default user login and look for your port forwarding options, you will need to forward port 80

Now you can forward port 21 & 22 if you so choose to which would be used for ssh & ftp.

Once you have all this setup you will either need to purchase a domain from a domain host and set it up to your IP.

This I can't help you with as each domain host is different. I would reframe from using something like freenoms service as they block out connections for "being too slow" which will heavily reduce your audience.

Once that is all done you will have your own website hosted on a $35 computer.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now this will work with a retropi so you can get multi-usage out of one pi, but the performance as a webserver & as a gaming machine will be hindered, and will heat up rather quickly if you plan on playing anything like n64 or dreamcast games.

Now what I think is the most interesting route is the command line envirorments, as you could possibly get more out of it that way. I tested it with arch linux and keep in mind this is the first form of arch I have ever touched, and I don't fair well out side of debian based linux distros usually. I got it setup faster than I did in raspbian, but of course that could have to deal with almost instant boot because no messy GUI system outside of text.

At anyrate the less resources you are using up the more you can get out of these things in terms of webservers and various other servers. The thing is they are stupid cheap and easy to setup.I honestly don't think half of what is said helps. I have seen people hint at minecraft servers but I do not find that game interesting much anymore.
